How To Get Rid Of Dog Smell At Home

Getting rid of pet odor is a challenge all dog owners face, eventually. There are a few things that can help you with this everlasting problem. But don’t worry! Moving your four-legged friend to a dog house outside is not an option.

1. Sweep the Floors

Clean up loose debris your furry friend leaves behind. This includes shed hair, dirt, and dander. Remember to sweep carefully! Hairs and other light particles might get airborne and spread throughout your home, thus complicating your situation.

2. Vacuum Frequently

Carpets can be a magnet for many debris, especially hairs and dander. Vacuum every square foot and don’t forget the rugs as well! 

After the carpets, move to the furniture. Be very thorough. Make sure you cover all nooks and crannies. You can also vacuum curtains if you have the right attachments.

3. Wash All 

Fabric covers and linens are unfortunately a source of bad odors. Throw them in your washing machine for a refresh! This includes covers, bed linens, and pillowcases. After a certain point of use, dog wear soaks on the stench, new dog clothes are a necessity.

Be sure to check if they can withstand machine washing. If not, give them a good hand wash in your bathroom sink. Before you put them back, be sure they are completely dry.

4. Wash Your Dog’s Bed 

Besides your four-legged friend, its bed is the second main source of dog odor in your entire home. As this is probably the pet’s main spot, it keeps shed hair, saliva, dander, and even urine. 

To get rid of the dog smell put it in the washer for a long cycle and high temperature. Most mid to high-end dog beds can be machine washed, but check, just in case. The same goes for drying.

5. Air out Your Home

Letting some fresh air into your home regularly can help you eliminate dog odor. 

• Create a draft by opening all your windows, including any doors that you can. 
• Turn on all ceiling fans and your home’s central HVAC unit (turn off AC or heat – use only the fan). 
• If you live in a house and have an attic fan, be sure to turn it on.

6. Get an Air Purifier

7. Use Baking Soda

Try it on carpets too! Sprinkle baking soda and leave it overnight, then vacuum up the next day.
